We are always comparing

Every time you decide that someone is your kind of person, you have just finished a comparison. A remark that landed. A film you both quietly hated. The way they treat a waiter. Nobody sits down to judge anyone — you simply find out, one small thing at a time, and the verdict arrives before you notice it was being written.

Opinions are what we are actually made of, and they are how we pick each other. The only problem is the pace.

The finding out always comes late

It takes months of small talk to learn what one honest answer would have told you in a second. And by the time you know, you have already spent something on it — the third date, the shared flat, the job you took, the friendship you kept out of politeness.

Most of the time you never find out at all. You just drift, and call it life.

VECE just moves it earlier

You answer topics about things you genuinely have an opinion on — work, love, money, taste, the small daily things people are surprisingly firm about.

Your answers stay yours. Nobody sees them until the other person has answered the same topics. Then you both see it at the same moment: where you line up, and where you were never going to.

Nothing about the other person changed. You just found out a year earlier.

Nobody performs when nobody is watching

If answers were public, people would answer for the room — the version of themselves they would like you to see. Hiding them until both sides are in is the only way what you read is what the person actually thinks.
